![]() The pattern of deformation appears to them as the uneven subsidence of two northwest-trending basins, one on either side of the Madison Range. Another group considers the subsidence in Madison River Canyon to be due in part to compaction and slumping, and the Madison Range to have changed little in altitude. In this view, an eastward trending syncline has been propagated across the northwest-trending Madison Range. At least part of the highway through Madison River Canyon, which cuts directly across the Madison Range between Hebgen Lake and Madison Valley, subsided also one group of geologists regards this subsidence as tectonic, and considers the entire range, for which there are otherwise no positive data, to have subsided between Hebgen Lake and Madison Valley. ![]() Depth-sounding traverses of the lake recorded warping but gave no indication of major faulting of the lake bottom.Ī part of the Madison Valley, west of Hebgen Lake, also subsided, though not as much, and a segment of the Madison Range fault was reactivated. Parts of the basin subsided differentially, warping the lake bed and creating a gigantic long-lived seiche. Subsidence amounted to as much as 22 feet in the lake basin, as proved by releveling of bench marks by the Coast and Geodetic Survey and by shoreline measurements around Hebgen Lake. Offsets produced by refraction of faults, which are steeper in surficial material than in bedrock, and by various types of slumping, generally result in surficial scarps higher than true fault displacements. They are mostly in unconsolidated or weakly coherent material but certainly reflect displacements of the underlying bedrock. During the earthquake, several large normal faults northeast of Hebgen Lake, and many small faults and monoclines south of it, were reactivated, and a very large area was abruptly dropped and warped. We can't wait to go back.In the epicentral region of the Hebgen Lake earthquake, Montana, late Cenozoic structures marked by tension are superimposed on Laramide structures marked by compression. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. The general calm and quiet of the large building and lack of TVs in the rooms lend to a very peaceful and relaxing experience. The beer/wine/cider available at the front desk is a nice touch and La Grande is 15 mins away for dining. I cannot wait to see how the rest of this place turns out. We loved soaking at night so we could watch the stars and stare out into the calm lake (it can be pretty windy during the day). The soaking tubs are FANTASTIC, open 24/7 and are cleaned daily. They have managed to preserve many of the little design details that make this such a unique place. Yes, there are parts of it actively being worked on, but the parts that have been completed are a wonderful mix of vintage and modern style. It is a second floor corner room with a great view, excellent AC and a beyond comfortable bed. My husband and I stayed in room 213 and I cannot recommend it enough. Have traveled 15 countries and all throughout states to hot springs and 2-5 star hotels and never in my life have ever been treated in this manner from any hotel / property staff. These people need a lesson in hospitality and hotel management. Then went over to the other property and the owner was there, came at me the same way and snatched the paperwork out of my hand. ![]() UNREAL and truly possessed as old reviews and stories about the place have since come to light. FOR TAKING A PICTURE, with no other people there, with my car running in front of the lobby while the disabled friend I was traveling with was waiting - as we were about to go into the lobby to check in & speak with them about the options we had called ahead about. The worker deserved to be popped in the mouth for how she thought she could speak to me and I told her so, even made a fake gesture since she was insanely demanding me to leave and willing to call the cops. I never even had a chance to explain myself and the ugly treatment made me seething mad after driving so long and looking forward to finally relaxing. No hello, no welcome, no "are you a guest here?" or possibly "are you checking in?".nothing but malicious and aggressively rude talking down at me that I know better than to be here and need to leave "NOW". ![]() ![]() Within 30 seconds a woman comes out and aggressively yells at me " You need to leave the property NOW". There were no other people, guests or visible signs. I parked in front of the lobby and ran over to get a photo of the stream rising before it was too dark. I then drove 3 hours to arrive close to dusk. After talking extensively with one worker, she said I could decide when I arrived as we were considering the property next door (apparently same owner). Called hours ahead to inquire about lodging options and was told about the various options. ![]()
